Reddit is considering partnering with Sam Altman’s World ID to implement a biometric system that verifies user identities while keeping their anonymity intact. This system, which scans users’ irises to confirm both uniqueness and age, aims to address growing concerns about regulation and identity verification in the wake of evolving AI technologies and age-related laws.
Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that discussions are underway between Reddit and World ID’s parent company regarding the potential rollout of this biometric technology.
This collaboration would enable Reddit users to validate their identity without disclosing personal information to the platform itself.
The urgency of identity verification
Recently, Reddit’s CEO Steve Huffman mentioned that it’s vital for the platform to determine that users are who they claim to be. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring users are of legal age amid advancements in AI and the implementation of age verification regulations.
“We will strive to maintain both the essence of Reddit and user anonymity,” Huffman shared on the platform.
The problem is further compounded by AI tools, which can impersonate real Reddit users, as demonstrated by research from the University of Zurich. In April, Reddit’s legal team sent a formal request to the university regarding dubious research activities.
With several U.S. states enforcing age verification laws, there’s increasing compliance pressure for social media platforms.
World ID’s advanced privacy features
World ID systems tackle verification issues through advanced encryption methods. The ORB system scans a user’s iris and converts it into an encrypted format that is then fragmented and distributed across secure servers globally.
A hacker would need to breach multiple systems to access this iris data, combining fragmented pieces and reverse-engineering the original scan. Since the system doesn’t link biometric information to personal data, even if a hack occurs, the individual’s identity remains protected.
Once authenticated, users receive a unique World ID, which is securely stored on their device. ORB’s age detection feature specifically avoids scanning those suspected to be under 18 and implements an age verification mechanism.
Rather than being the sole option, Reddit is likely to offer World ID as one choice among several validation methods. Users will have the freedom to select from various third-party services based on their privacy desires and security requirements.
World ID, a biometric verification system utilizing iris scanning technology known as “Orbs,” created by Altman’s initiative, officially transitioned from beta to broader operational status on July 24, 2023, expanding to different cities around the globe.
