A recent post on Reddit’s “R/Delta” forum sparked quite the conversation, asking, “What is the strangest thing that happens to you on a plane?” This question has already garnered about 2,000 responses.
Participants shared unusual experiences, including one user who recounted a passenger, during the landing phase, pulling out a wooden recorder to entertain the other travelers. “I’m so glad he waited until the end of the flight,” the user noted, while others chimed in that it was “the absolute strangest thing I’ve seen on an aircraft.”
In the comments, users described a variety of odd situations. One recounted being seated beside a woman with a life-sized doll’s head adorned with messy hair. “No, she wasn’t a hairdresser,” the user added, somewhat humorously.
Another user found it particularly unsettling when fellow passengers clipped their toenails, having witnessed this three times: “It’s, um, really not something you want to see while flying.” And yet another observed a woman who carelessly stowed her cock in a jar in the overhead compartment.
One individual told of a lady who brought spaghetti and meatballs on board, hastily eating from a plastic bag—definitely not a common airplane meal choice! Meanwhile, someone shared the discomfort of trying to work with an older man continuously probing about his job, refusing to take social cues.
Other strange anecdotes included a person flossing their teeth right after a meal or a passenger changing a baby’s diaper directly on the fold-down table, much to everyone’s dismay. “Yes, the whole plane smelled dirty diapers for the rest of the flight,” a user remarked.
Gary Leff, a travel expert, weighed in on the matter, suggesting that passengers need to be aware of others’ personal space during flights. He noted that while behavior varies, what’s often criticized is related to personal hygiene and grooming.
Jacqueline Whitmore, an etiquette expert, emphasized the importance of spatial awareness in sitting arrangements. With seats becoming tighter, encroaching on someone else’s space is still a no-go, unless, of course, you’re close to them.
For those who opt to go barefoot, Whitmore suggested wearing socks instead, as going shoeless in public can spread bacteria. It’s a small nod to common courtesy.
Leff further commented on the changing dynamics of air travel, where affordability has led to a diverse mix of passengers, each with their own habits and expectations. “Air travel brings together all kinds of people, often during stressful times, leading them to act as if they’re in private,” he explained.
Indeed, the shared space of an airplane can bring out some strange human behavior, often leading to unexpected and bizarre stories.
