Reds Pitcher Frustrated by Umpire Interference
In a recent game, Reds pitcher Caleb Ferguson expressed his frustration after umpire Bill Miller interfered with a play, which allowed a pitch that should have been a ground out to turn into a single during a tough 8-0 loss against the Mariners in Cincinnati.
Ferguson was reportedly overheard saying some heated words directed at Miller, including an expletive-laden comment that reflected his anger over the situation.
The game shifted dramatically as Seattle, down 1-0, suddenly took a commanding 7-0 lead after Ferguson and teammate Pierce Johnson surrendered six runs in a single inning. This all happened just when Ferguson seemed close to escaping a challenging seventh inning.
Mariners right fielder Victor Robles hit a ground ball towards second base, and as Reds second baseman Edwin Arroyo attempted to make the play, he collided with Miller. This misstep left the Mariners with runners on the corners, but the following batter, Luke Lally, struck out, preventing any further scoring at that moment.
Ferguson was visibly upset, vocally expressing his annoyance with Miller while awaiting the ball. This frustration likely intensified after allowing a grand slam to Cal Lowry, which further widened the gap at 7-0.
In a surprising decision that puzzled some, including Lowry and Mariners manager Dan Wilson, Ferguson had been told to intentionally walk Dominic Canzone to face Lowry instead.
Reds manager Terry Francona acknowledged the discomfort of the situation, stating that despite how it felt, he believed in the tactic of preventing further scoring in such moments.
Ferguson managed to strike out Lally, finishing the game with two outs while allowing three hits, two runs, and one walk. His ERA has now risen to 3.98.
The Reds, following this disappointing loss, are now sitting at 45 wins and 54 losses, placing them at the bottom of the National League Central Division. However, on a more positive note, the team recently secured a significant seven-year, $105 million contract extension for their promising pitcher Chase Barnes, marking the largest contract in team history for that position.
