Francona will replace head coach David Bell, who was fired with just a few games remaining before the end of the season. The Reds hired Bell before the start of the 2019 season to replace Brian Price and Jim Riggleman. Price was fired during the 2018 season, and Riggleman took over for the remainder of that year.
Bell never led Cincinnati to a higher than third place finish in the National League Central Division. The Reds made the playoffs during the coronavirus-impacted 2020 season, their only playoff appearance since 2013.
Mr. Bell has 409 wins and 456 losses as a manager.
Francona has an impressive resume.

He managed the Boston Red Sox when they finally broke the Bambino curse in 2004, helping them come back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. , and went on to win the team's first World Series title since 1918.
