Rece Davis didn’t seem to quite accept Johnny Manziel’s reason for missing last weekend’s “College GameDay.” During an episode of his podcast, the ESPN host offered a subtle critique of the former college football player.
In a rather odd twist, Manziel, who had been promoted as a guest for the show, ended up not appearing while it was live from Texas A&M—where he once played quarterback. Instead, Thunder player Alex Caruso took his place.
Manziel later took to social media to apologize for his absence, citing a sudden illness, as reported by various outlets. A representative for him mentioned he had fallen ill with norovirus after spending time with family earlier in the week.
However, Davis expressed skepticism about Manziel’s comments regarding reporters Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel. On the “College Gum Day Podcast,” he remarked on the need to be cautious about breakfast choices before a big game, implying that it could lead to unforeseen issues. “It can make you feel sick or hard to get to where you need to go. But, moving on,” Davis said, while jokingly questioning whether “bad breakfast” was a trendy term among kids today.
“Just don’t point fingers,” he advised. “Those who pay attention will catch the underlying messages there.” Honestly, it seems like there’s more to the story, possibly influenced by Manziel’s attendance at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight the night before, sparking speculation about whether there were other reasons behind his no-show.
In the end, Texas A&M fell to Miami, 10-3, in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. It’s a loss that didn’t help the situation for anyone involved.
