Reese Witherspoon Honors Diane Keaton After Her Passing
Reese Witherspoon paid a heartfelt tribute to Diane Keaton following the announcement of her death at 79. Witherspoon appeared at an event in Los Angeles and addressed the audience, taking a few moments to process the news publicly.
In a video shared on social media, Witherspoon started, her voice trembling, “I just wanted to talk to you for a second. I’m going to get through this without crying. But I don’t know if you guys heard that Diane Keaton passed away today.”
The news was met with a mix of reactions, with some attendees expressing familiarity with the situation, while others seemed surprised to hear it for the first time.
Witherspoon shared that Keaton had been a significant mentor to her early in her career, choosing her for a role in the 1991 TV movie Wildflowers. Keaton, who was directing the film, was drawn to Witherspoon’s authenticity and Southern accent, hiring her immediately.
“Is that a hoax? Did you do that accent?” Keaton asked, during the audition.
In the film, Witherspoon co-starred with Patricia Arquette and Beau Bridges, expressing her gratitude for Keaton’s guidance. She recalled, “She really took the time to pull me aside and say, ‘Stand up straight, okay?'” Witherspoon joked about wanting her posture to improve, reflecting, “If you’re going to be an actress, you’ve got to straighten up, right?”
Witherspoon also remembered Keaton’s feedback during a crucial scene. “She was like, ‘Oh my god, that was amazing.’ But then she said, ‘That wasn’t very good, so let’s go with the first one,’” Witherspoon explained.
Calling Keaton “very original,” Witherspoon encouraged everyone to honor her memory by enjoying her films and embracing uniqueness: “Wear really cool, funny clothes, take cool photos, just live the dream. Just be unique and interesting. I think Diane would be really happy.”
Witherspoon expressed her gratitude on social media, highlighting the impact that Keaton had as a mentor.
Keaton, a beloved figure in Hollywood, had stepped back from the public eye in recent months due to declining health.
Emotional tributes poured in, particularly from Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, who co-starred with Keaton in the classic film The First Wives Club. Both expressed shock at her passing.
Although Keaton never married, she leaves behind two adopted children, Dexter and Duke, whom she welcomed in her 50s.
