Klingons Redefined in New “Star Trek” Series
In a fresh take, Klingons are portrayed differently in the latest “Star Trek” show, “Starfleet Academy.” The co-writer has emphasized the importance of integrating LGBTQ+ themes into the storyline.
Noga Landor had a chat with Polygon about reshaping the narrative of Klingon warriors, aiming to redefine their traditional image. The Star Trek Fandom describes Klingons as a proud race known for their honor and combat skills, yet this new interpretation flips that tradition on its head.
Klingons as Refugees
Landor discussed the decision to label Klingons as refugees, which, considering their endangered status, seems fitting. She mentioned, “There are always so many refugees in the world. It’s part of the human condition. We feel that way with shows like Starfleet Academy. It’s crucial to share those stories.”
In the episode titled “Vox of Excelso,” a Klingon character, Jae-Den Krag, rejects combative traditions for a life in medicine and grapples with public speaking fears.
Non-Traditional Family Structures
Interestingly, Clague’s journey not only alienates him from his parents for choosing a peaceful path, but it’s revealed that he comes from a polyamorous household with multiple parents. Landor noted, “There have always been people in the world with three parents. We thought that some viewers might not have seen their own families represented on screen, so we embraced that.” Klingons aren’t shown to shy away from unique family dynamics.
Exploring New Themes
Actor Karim Dian hinted at further exploration of Klingon sexuality in upcoming episodes, stating, “He doesn’t really enjoy fighting. He has a passion for healing and wants to help others.” In a notable scene, a Klingon is seen in an intimate moment with a non-binary character.
This isn’t the first time “Star Trek” has ventured into diverse narratives; prior series have also introduced varied gender identities and family structures. Notably, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is set to introduce a non-binary character, reinforcing the franchise’s commitment to evolving storytelling.
