HGTV has decided to cancel “Rehab Addict” following an incident involving the show’s star, Nicole Curtis, who was recorded using a racial slur.
On Wednesday, a clip was released by RadarOnline showing Curtis, while on a renovation site, expressing frustration and inadvertently saying the N-word.
She appeared taken aback by her own words and quickly remarked, “What did I just say?”
In a statement, HGTV commented that the racist remarks did not align with the network’s values, stating, “Such language not only hurts and disappoints our viewers, partners, and employees, but is also inconsistent with HGTV’s values.” As a result, the series was removed from all HGTV platforms.
In the same footage, Curtis is heard asking someone off-screen to “kill that thing,” and she also expressed frustration by saying, “Oh, fuck my life.”
Following the backlash, Curtis issued an apology to TMZ, emphasizing, “the word in question is incorrect” and insisting it has never been a part of her language. She stated she would now focus on her community and the people who know her values.
The 49-year-old expressed regret over the situation, stating, “I want to be clear: the word in question is incorrect and is not, and never has been, part of my vocabulary. I apologize to everyone.” She also noted her appreciation for the 15-year journey with HGTV, declaring, “It was a meaningful chapter, but my focus is on my relationships and my community.”
On Instagram, she indicated family takes precedence, mentioning, “There’s a lot more to this, but family comes first and right now I need to be a mom before anything else. I’m going to take my time and be transparent and honest like I’ve always been with you.”
As for “Rehab Addict,” it had premiered in 2010 on the DIY Network and transitioned to HGTV in 2014. It completed eight seasons and was set to start airing new episodes on February 11, but was ultimately canceled prior to that date. The show has also been pulled from streaming services such as HBO Max and Discovery+.
