Actress Jamie Lee Curtis responded to the recent Democratic wins by calling it a “repudiation” of Donald Trump, although many successes were in traditionally liberal areas.
During her speech at the Women in Film Honors at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, Curtis, who received The Jane Fonda Humanitarian Award, jumped right into political commentary. accepted.
“This is all about women in film backing each other in an industry that, much like politics, often overlooks them, so I’m thrilled to be here today, just two days after pushing back against the establishment,” she declared from the stage.
The actress, known for her role in Halloween, highlighted the significant victories of female Democratic candidates, such as Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger in Virginia.
“My father [Henry Fonda], he was part of the first First Amendment committee,” she recalled, reflecting on her father’s commitment to First Amendment rights. “It was a fight against parts of the government trying to undermine our freedoms. Right now, it feels like the entire federal government is involved. We really need to act because things are worse than they were back in the ’40s and ’50s,” she stated.
The initiative pushing for First Amendment rights was recently launched by Jane Fonda, who faced criticism and was labeled “Communist Jane” for her views during the Vietnam War.
Curtis shared how supporting other women has led to her own personal growth. “As a young woman, I always admired this group of women… banding together to create significant events for children,” she said. “It didn’t take long for me to realize that it wasn’t just about them. I learned that collaborating with other women can create a positive impact.” Over time, she adapted this mindset into her own endeavors.
