Relatives of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, have reportedly received subpoenas as part of an ongoing federal investigation concerning her. According to various sources, including The New York Times, subpoenas were issued to her sister, Sahra Noor, as well as at least one other family member, with rumors suggesting that around a dozen subpoenas might have been sent in connection with the case.
Noor recently published a memoir detailing her immigration journey from Somalia to the United States. She also runs a consulting firm in Minneapolis, which focuses on securing funding for health-related initiatives from government sources.
The news about subpoenas directed at Omar’s relatives emerged shortly after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted a raid on her Washington, D.C. home. It’s important to note that Omar herself was not subpoenaed during this process.
Federal investigators are looking into Omar’s immigration history, particularly examining whether her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided false information on his immigration documents prior to becoming a U.S. citizen. This could have implications for Omar’s own citizenship status since she became a citizen when she was just 17. Possible charges could include conspiracy and making false statements regarding immigration paperwork.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that there are ongoing investigations linked to Omar regarding her immigration status as well as her financial disclosures. She mentioned, “If there was a crime that was committed, it will be prosecuted.”
In response to the raid, Omar’s office claimed on X that it was an act rooted in political motivations orchestrated by former President Donald Trump’s administration. They described the raid as “an outrageous abuse of power” and accused the federal government of targeting political adversaries. Omar argued that Trump has long focused on her with harmful rhetoric and that the raid marks an alarming escalation of these attacks.
Meanwhile, both Trump and Vice President JD Vance have denied any involvement with the raid, with White House Border Czar Tom Homan confirming that a federal judge approved the search warrant.
