According to new records and audio recordings released by the city, Salvador’s uncle, Armando Ramos, argued to officers that his nephew “always listened to what he had to say” and that if he could talk to him, he might be able to convince the shooter to drop his weapon and turn himself in.

“Maybe he’ll listen to me, because he listens to everything I say,” Ramos explained to the correspondent, “Maybe he can do something to step aside or turn himself in.”

He went on to tell the correspondent that Salvador was with him last night and had been in his room all night, and also said that his nephew was upset because his grandmother was “haunting” him.

“Oh, God, please don’t do anything stupid. I think he’s shooting kids,” Armando said in a panic on the phone.

Many have criticised the police response to the shooting as a “huge tactical and moral failure”, with nearly 400 officers waiting more than 70 minutes to confront the gunman.

Law enforcement teams consisting of 91 state troopers, about 150 U.S. Border Patrol agents, local police and school police waited in the hallways as desperate students inside classrooms kept calling 911 on their cellphones while parents outside pleaded for police to intervene.

The gunman was inside a classroom, pointing a gun at students and teachers, but disturbing and infuriating video taken from the scene showed officers roaming the hallways, some with rifles and bulletproof shields.

But at about 12:50 p.m., a tactical team finally entered the building and shot and killed Salvador Ramos.

Meanwhile, former Uvalde Schools Police Chief Pete Arredondo and former school employee Adrian Gonzalez have pleaded not guilty to numerous charges of child abandonment and child endangerment.

A state police officer in Uvalde, Texas, who was suspended over the controversy, was also reinstated this month.

Additionally, the victims’ parents have filed federal and state lawsuits against police, social media platforms, online gaming companies and the manufacturer of the rifle used by the shooter, and are calling for more police officers to be prosecuted.
