Religious 'Tradpop' Music Returns as Conservative Values Rise in Culture

Resurgence of Faith-based Pop Music

Faith-centered “traditional pop” music, or “Tradpop,” seems to be experiencing a revival. This trend is emerging as conservative values gain traction in mainstream culture, particularly following Donald Trump’s significant 2024 election victory.

This week, a love song called “Normal,” inspired by Alex Warren’s faith, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics highlight themes of spirituality, mentioning terms like Lord, Holy Water, and Hallelujah. The song has maintained its spot at the top for the past 20 weeks.

Warren’s lyrics include thought-provoking phrases such as, “The angels in the clouds are jealous,” and express a longing for something transcendent. There’s a mix of vulnerability and a yearning for divine connection throughout the song.

In the country music scene, artist Morgan Warren has topped the charts for five straight weeks with his album “I’m The Problem,” breaking his own records for the most songs appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 at once.

Other artists like Jerry Roll, Thomas Lett, Benson Boone, and Shaboosie are finding success with their brand of country pop and folk-influenced music.

There’s a noticeable cultural shift compared to last summer, where pop music was largely defined by artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Charlie XCX, noted Semer. This year’s landscape feels vastly different.

Pop music commentator Sam Murphy remarked on the current musical climate, suggesting that it represents a turn toward more conventional and conservative themes. Many of the emerging artists strongly align with religious values, which is evident in their music.

Interestingly, veteran pop icon Lady Gaga is facing challenges on the charts with her latest offerings. Tracks like “Abracadabra” and “Illness” didn’t make it into the top 10, while her more traditional-sounding song “Die With a Smile” is drawing attention.

Murphy pointed out that as we approach a more conservative political climate, cultural expressions like music naturally reflect that shift. There’s a sense that after swinging one way, a return to traditional values becomes likely.

Warren’s rise in popularity coincides with a growing acceptance among young conservatives favoring traditional values, particularly regarding marriage and family life. This shift became apparent when Gen Z conservatives spoke about embodying a “trade life” during a recent summit, emphasizing independence from government influence.

After returning from the summit, McMichael expressed optimism about cultivating a patriotic generation committed to traditional values.
