Tragic Incident in Laguna Beach: 5-Year-Old Girl Found After Wave Sweeps Her Away
In a heartbreaking event in Laguna Beach, California, authorities have retrieved the body of a 5-year-old girl who was swept away by a powerful wave. The girl, identified as Amada Mia Brown from San Bernardino, was at the beach with her mother and sibling when a rip current suddenly struck.
On Tuesday evening, while enjoying their time by the ocean, the family found themselves overpowered by the current. Bystanders quickly jumped in to rescue the mother and one of the children, but young Brown was pulled further out and, despite immediate efforts to locate her, she went missing.
“This is one of the most heartbreaking incidents I have witnessed during my time serving this community,” said Laguna Beach Mayor Mark Orgill, expressing his sorrow.
Rescue teams utilized high-powered flashlights to search for Brown on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the U.S. Coast Guard had to halt their search efforts on Wednesday night when there were no leads or breakthroughs.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the child’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Suspending a search is an extremely difficult decision. We launched assets and responded as quickly as possible, continuously searching throughout the night and until sunset on June 10, 2026,” stated Captain Stacey Crecy, commander of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.
Brown’s body was eventually discovered on Thursday, located between 250 to 300 yards from the shoreline at Christmas Cove, roughly a quarter-mile from where she was taken by the waves, as per city officials.
While Orange County’s ocean conditions contribute to its reputation as a premier surfing destination, they can also pose serious risks. Philip Gonsalves, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego, noted that the area is susceptible to large waves due to its underwater geography, along with swells that travel across thousands of miles from the southern Pacific, which can create particularly hazardous surf.
As for further details regarding Brown’s identity or the exact cause of her death, those insights have yet to be released. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Coroner Division will oversee the investigation.
