Indictments for Sinaloa Cartel Leaders

Recent announcements reveal that Rene “La Lana” Alzate Garcia and his brother Alfonso “Achilles” Alzate Garcia, leaders within the Sinaloa Cartel’s Tijuana Plaza, face new indictments for large-scale drug trafficking into the United States. The U.S. State Department has even offered rewards of up to $5 million each for information that could lead to their capture.

La Lana has taken on an increasingly powerful and ruthless role in the cartel, with charges including narco-terrorism, engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, and providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He’s also implicated in international drug distribution involving methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, and marijuana, along with money laundering.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Alzate Garcia brothers have jointly led the Sinaloa Cartel’s operations in Tijuana for around 15 years. They’ve maintained their grip through violent tactics, strategic alliances, and significant local influence, which includes corruption in political and police spheres.

In spite of ongoing conflicts, authorities assert control over crucial human trafficking routes, emphasizing their role in the cartel’s operations—especially concerning the trafficking of fentanyl, which has been called a “weapon of mass destruction” by the Trump administration.

In court filings, La Lana reportedly employs paramilitary forces for patrolling and uses explosive-laden drones for surveillance. Officials also highlighted that his group possesses a collection of high-powered military weapons, such as assault rifles and grenade launchers.

Attorney General Pam Bondi remarked that organizations like the Sinaloa Cartel have inflicted harm upon communities for years, but measures under the Trump administration aim to change that. She stated, “This latest indictment follows the landmark conviction of Sinaloa Cartel co-founder ‘El Mayo’ and signifies a significant step in our effort to dismantle these criminal organizations.”

Last year, President Trump classified the Sinaloa Cartel as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

The Alzate-Garcia siblings were initially charged with drug trafficking in separate cases in the Southern District of California back in 2014, and they’ve been in hiding since then. Most recently, in August 2023, the Treasury Department’s Office of Financial Assets Control designated them for financial sanctions.

FBI Director Kash Patel expressed the bureau’s firm commitment to disrupting the Sinaloa cartel’s operations. He mentioned, “We will use all resources available to prevent further drugs and violence from entering our communities. The leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel will face the consequences for their actions.”
