Representative Al Green Escorted Out of House Chamber During Trump’s Address
On February 24, 2026, Representative Al Green from Texas was removed from the House chamber just as President Donald Trump was arriving to deliver his State of the Union address. Green was spotted holding a sign that read “Black people are not apes” on the Democrats’ side of the chamber.
As Capitol security escorted him out, chants of “USA” were heard from Republican members.
This sign was in reaction to a video posted by Trump on his Truth Social account earlier in February. The video, which started with content about the 2020 election, abruptly transitioned to a brief AI-generated clip featuring former President Obama and First Lady Michelle depicted as apes.
Other figures in the video included Trump portrayed as a lion, Hillary Clinton as a warthog, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as a meerkat, former President Joe Biden as a baboon, and former Vice President Kamala Harris as a turtle.
The White House later stated that the video was “erroneously” posted by an unnamed staff member.
Trump remarked to reporters, “I looked at the beginning of it. It was fine. It was a very strong post in terms of voter fraud. Nobody knew that that was in the end. If they would have looked, they would have seen it, and probably they would have had the sense to take it down.”
This is not the first time Green has been ejected. He was previously escorted out during Trump’s joint address to Congress in March 2025, where he repeatedly shouted criticisms, including, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid.”
