Rep. Al Green tells DHS Secretary Mullin to be quiet during hearing

Backlash Against Texas Democrat’s Comments

Texas Democratic Representative Al Green, well-known for his persistent efforts to impeach former President Donald Trump, faced considerable online criticism after labeling Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin as racist.

Green interrupted Mullin as he began to defend himself, stating, “Shut up.” This abrupt exchange caught the attention of the Republican National Committee, which denounced the interaction as “UNHINGED.”

The incident underscores how Green’s often theatrical actions against the Trump administration have resonated online, drawing backlash from conservative circles. Recently, Green lost a primary contest to newcomer Rep. Christian Menefee after a redistricting effort placed the two Texas Democrats in direct competition.

Greene has consistently been one of the most vocal opponents of Trump among Democrats, spearheading at least six impeachment initiatives and urging fellow party members to more actively counter the President’s policies. Earlier this year, Green was removed from the State of the Union address for displaying a controversial sign.

During a recent hearing, Green pointed out that Mullin, back when he was a senator, was among several Republicans who sought to downplay his protest. He said, “Racists will paint people of color as monkeys. This is a peaceful protest, Secretary,” while referencing a previous incident.

Even after Mullin attempted to respond, Green persisted in admonishing him to remain silent. He further demanded that the Republican chairman enforce his requests to keep Mullin quiet. Green insisted, “Get your time back. Ask him to shut up.”

Political commentator Benny Johnson criticized Green’s attitude during this exchange, suggesting it reflects a broader disrespect within the modern Democratic Party. He stated, “There is no respect. No discussion.”

Others, like the conservative platform Libs on TikTok, also expressed embarrassment on behalf of Democrats over Green’s behavior, labeling him a “disenfranchised lunatic.”

Another voice in conservative media, Eric Daugherty, remarked on how Green’s recent rants exemplified his unpopularity, saying, “Good riddance!” in reference to Green’s loss in the primary.

In the hearing, DHS Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino stepped in to restore order, noting that he wouldn’t tolerate negative character attacks. Before the session continued, Mullin remarked that voters had clearly made their choice regarding Green, implying they were done with him.

Ignoring pleas to refrain from character attacks, Green asserted he would continue speaking, urging interruptors to be quiet once more.
