Ocasio-Cortez Supports Nationwide Anti-ICE Protests but Keeps Office Open
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York expressed her “full support” for the nationwide anti-ICE protests scheduled for Friday, although her office will remain open and not participate.
The “Shut Down the Nation” campaign organizers declared that “enough is enough,” advocating for “no school, no work, no shopping” following the tragic shooting deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good during a federal immigration operation in Minnesota.
According to the organizers, the Twin Cities have set an example for others, emphasizing the need to end ICE’s actions, describing them as a “reign of terror.”
While Ocasio-Cortez has been critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, she made it clear that her office would be available for community support and immigration matters, stating on Instagram, “Full disclosure—my office handles casework and immigration concerns that are vital for our community.” She emphasized her commitment to help immigrant families.
She went on to extend “full support for national mobilization, general strikes, and mass movement efforts.”
The campaign claimed online that ICE and Border Patrol agents are “invading communities” to instill fear and “kidnap neighbors.”
They highlighted the urgent need for unity against what they termed a national shutdown.
Preti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, was fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent on January 24 while documenting an immigration enforcement operation. Good was killed by ICE agents on January 7, who stated they acted in self-defense when he allegedly used his SUV threateningly.
On January 23, a massive anti-ICE demonstration took place, aiming to halt federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota.
No further comments have been made by Ocasio-Cortez’s office as of now.
