Legislation Introduced to Honor Charlie Kirk
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) recently put forth a proposal commending Charlie Kirk for his “unwavering devotion to the American spirit, even in the face of his political adversaries.”
This announcement was made Thursday, just a day after Kirk was tragically shot at an event in Utah.
“I’ve proposed legislation to recognize Charlie Kirk for his steadfast dedication to the American spirit—even amidst the loss of his political opponents,” Ogles noted.
He emphasized that Kirk played a significant role in shaping national discourse and inspiring students, stating, “He bravely declared Christ crucified with passion and conviction.”
“Today, we honor Charlie Kirk by taking actions reflective of what he stood for. We will not retreat despite the grave threats posed by those opposing us,” he added, sharing a glimpse of the proposed legislation titled “Charlie Kirk Congress’ Gold Medal Act.”
The act presents Kirk as “an American hero whose life was tragically cut short by political assassins at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.”
Ogles further described Kirk as a devoted follower of Jesus, who passionately proclaimed the gospel, fought for good causes, and remained steadfast in his faith. He also highlighted Kirk’s love for his family, mentioning his wife, Erica, and their two young children.
Moreover, he expressed that Kirk had an “undeniable love for his country” and motivated young people to proudly uphold the founding principles of America.
On the Senate side, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) is now seeking bipartisan support for a resolution that would also honor Kirk.
Lee remarked, “I hope that my colleagues from both parties can unite to condemn this act of political violence and pay tribute to a champion of free speech and truth who touched many lives.”
In addition, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
“Charlie was a monumental figure of his time, a champion of freedom, and an inspiration to millions,” Trump stated.
He added, “Our thoughts are with his wonderful wife, Erica, and their beautiful children. We miss him dearly, but there’s no denying the courage he instilled in countless others, especially the youth.”
Trump expressed, “I am happy to share that Charlie Kirk will soon receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. We will announce the date of the ceremony soon, and I can assure you one thing…”
