Rep. Bob Good vows to challenge razor-thin primary loss to Trump-backed foe

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good on Monday pleaded with supporters for funds for a recount and announced plans to challenge the certification of his possible primary defeat.

Sen. Good (R-VA) is trailing state Sen. John Maguire, who is backed by former President Donald Trump, by 368 votes in the Republican primary to represent the state’s 5th Congressional District.

“I believe we’ve won,” Goode, 58, argued on Trump’s former White House strategist Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast.

“We will be filing a legal challenge in the coming days. [votes in] Largest city: Lynchburg [in the district]cannot be certified,” Good added.

“There are concerns about the outcome throughout the district, but Lynchburg is a big key,” he continued. “If you elect a swamp creature, you can’t win.”

Bob Good again insisted he wasn’t the one who lost. War Room

Good claims that multiple suspicious fire alarms went off at polling places on the night of the June 18 primary, including at Liberty University, his alma mater and where he once worked.

The alarm was set off by cleaning equipment and prompted evacuation for about 15 minutes. According to local authorities.

“There were three ‘fires’ in three precincts on Election Day that all required 20-minute evacuations: Albemarle County, Hanover County, and the City of Lynchburg. What are the odds? Does anyone remember a single fire in a precinct on Election Day?” Great. Posted on June 20th.

On the night of the primary, Maguire declared victory over Good, telling supporters, “I’m your Republican candidate.”

The Associated Press has not yet released the results of the state Senate race, and Maguire’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Under Virginia lawA recount is not automatic, but the loser can request one if the margin of victory is less than one percentage point.

McGuire currently leads Good by 0.6 percentage points.

“If you want true conservatives to prevail and not be dominated by the vile people, support this effort,” Goode urged Bannon’s audience.

Outside groups spent an estimated $10.7 million on the primary, more than half of which was targeted at Good. According to OpenSecrets analysis:.

“Just think about who is backing my opponent,” Good complained. “Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, Eric Cantor – swamp dwellers and RINOs who pledge allegiance to endless war and the military-industrial complex – are funding my opponent.”

Trump, 78, was apparently upset that Good had previously endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, before switching his support once it became clear that Trump would be the nominee.

Good was also one of eight Republicans who banded together with 208 Democrats to oust Rep. McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his position as Speaker last fall.

Far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) also joined Maguire’s campaign, praising the liberal party leader’s supposed defeat on primary night.

Greene was expelled from the ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus last year after a spat with Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., whom she called a “little devil.”

The candidate who wins the primary will be greatly favored to hold onto the Republican seat in the Nov. 5 election.
