Challenge for Rep. Cory Mills from Former TV Anchor
In Washington, U.S. Representative Cory Mills is facing a significant challenge from Ryan Ilya, a former local TV news anchor in Florida. Ilya believes that the ongoing scandals surrounding Mills could be detrimental in the upcoming general election.
Ryan Ilya, who once anchored for FOX 35 Orlando, has announced his intention to run against Mills (R-FL) for the congressional seat representing Florida’s 7th District.
“We need representatives in Washington who prioritize the needs of the people. Having lived in this district for 14 years, I’ll focus on hardworking families, small businesses, and safe communities,” Ilya stated.
He described the allegations against Mills as “serious” and mentioned to a news outlet that there’s a valid concern about losing seats.
Mills, who was elected to the House in 2023, has been involved in various controversies. Some colleagues, including Rep. Nancy Mace, have called for his resignation.
He is already facing competition from other Republican candidates, Michael Johnson and Sarah Ulrich, for the upcoming 2024 election.
The primary election in Florida is set for August 18th. Mills, a veteran, is dealing with accusations of stolen valor, financial misconduct, and domestic violence, all of which he strongly denies.
The domestic violence allegation is particularly notable. An investigation by the Washington, D.C. Metro Police began last year, focusing on an alleged assault on a female Republican activist in his penthouse. Interestingly, the victim later retracted important parts of her complaint.
Additionally, the police sought an arrest warrant for Mills, but it was not approved by the acting U.S. Attorney in D.C. at that time.
Another legal battle involves 2024 Miss United States Lindsay Langston, who alleges Mills attempted to blackmail her with intimate images following a relationship that supposedly occurred between late 2021 and early 2025.
A judge has granted her a restraining order against him.
Mills previously maintained that he was working on resolving his divorce case. He received the Bronze Star Medal for military service in 2021, although there are disputes regarding his military record.
Unlike some scandal-ridden former lawmakers who resigned recently after facing expulsion threats, Mills remains steadfast. In response to a question about his refusal to step down, he queried, “What criminal or civil charges am I facing?” emphasizing that he’s only been accused.
