Rep. Dan Goldman sputters after being fact-checked on air about Trump debating Harris

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) was surprised during a Fox News interview Monday when host Bret Baier corrected Goldman after he claimed former President Donald Trump didn’t want to debate Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris, who is the leading Democratic candidate following President Joe Biden’s departure from office, has so far only agreed to one debate with Trump, despite Trump offering two more.

“If I were Donald Trump, I could understand why he wouldn’t want to do the debate. Kamala Harris is a former prosecutor,” Goldman began.

“Well, he accepted three of them. He agreed with Sept. 4, Sept. 10 and Sept. 17. He agreed with a lot of them. So it’s not like he’s obviously afraid of debate,” Beyer interjected.

“No, no, no. So he agreed to the ABC one on September 10th,” Goldman replied.

Harris promised to schedule some sort of interview by the end of the month.

Baier noted that Trump had originally agreed to debate Biden, not Harris.

“What’s different? Why isn’t he debating whoever the nominee is on September 10th as agreed? What’s the difference between Biden and Harris?” Goldman asked.

“No, no, it’s OK. He said he’s going to do it. I’m just saying he agreed to the other debates. You said he didn’t agree to the other debates. He did. It’s the Kamala Harris campaign that didn’t agree to the objections,” Beyer said.

Ms. Harris has stuck to scripted appearances since becoming a presidential candidate and has not given interviews to any news organizations. In a rare public appearance with reporters accompanying her, she promised to schedule some interviews by the end of the month.

CNN Pressed Adrienne Elrod, a senior spokesperson for the Harris campaign, questioned why Harris was not interviewed today when she theoretically could have done so because she is not traveling.

“It appears she has time to do interviews with members of the media and press conferences if she wants to,” host John Berman said.

Elrod defended Harris, pointing to her campaign activities last week and her “in-person” visits with voters.
