Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, a Long Island Republican, introduced a House resolution this week condemning those who celebrate cop killer Assata Shakur and convicted Black Liberation Army extremists like “Squad” Rep. Jamal Bowman. submitted.
Shakur’s real name was Joan Chesimard, and he was involved in several execution-style killings of New York City police officers in 1971 and 1972, and was later accused of killing New Jersey State Police Officer Werner Foerster in 1973, along with two others. He was convicted along with his name.
Chesimard is believed to have escaped from a New Jersey prison in 1979 and been granted political asylum in Cuba.she stays the same FBI’s Most Wanted List.
D’Esposito’s resolution states that Chesimard is “suspected of firing at a police cruiser while riding in a van in 1981, killing one NYPD officer and injuring another after fleeing.”
The resolution also includes NYPD Patrolman Joseph Piagentini, NYPD Patrolman Waverly Jones, NYPD Patrolman Gregory Foster, NYPD Patrolman Rocco Lowry, and NYPD Patrolman John・It also honors the lives of police officers who died in connection with Chesimard, such as Scarangella.
“Joan Chesimard is a despicable cop killer hiding in communist Cuba to escape justice at home, but there are a surprising number of sympathizers in the United States who glorify this brutal criminal.” City Police Detective D’Esposito said. post.
“My determination makes it clear that Joanne Chesimard and those who worship her evil deeds deserve the highest degree of condemnation. I hope that justice will be served and that Chesimard will answer for her actions. I will never stop advocating.”
Mr. Bowman, the former principal of Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, once placed the fugitive on the Bronx middle school’s “wall of honor,” and was asked about the incident by one of his Democratic primary challengers. When asked about it, he defended the move.
“Who are you to tell someone about their own history and how they should relate to the people in their history?” Bowman said of his opponent at a Feb. 21 Yonkers 3rd Precinct Regional Council meeting. He told Marty Dolan:
“My school had black and Latino students,” added Bowman, who is black. “We tried to teach as much as we could about Black and Latino history, the good, the bad and the ugly.”
“I refuse to accept criticism,” he said. “I’m answering questions the way I want to answer them. We, the kids at my school, learned the history of people outside the walls, and many other people. That’s what we did. That’s it. Period.”
The newspaper reached out to Bowman’s office for comment on D’Esposito’s resolution.
“Joan Chesimard is a convicted cop murderer on the run in Cuba, but he’s still at the mercy of despicable politicians like Jamal Bowman who spit in the faces of every police officer and family of a fallen hero. “He’s been praised,” said Paul DiGiacomo, president of the NYPD Criminal Fund Association. post.
“The DEA is grateful to Congressman D’Esposito for exposing the shame of those who celebrate Chesimard,” DiGiacomo said.
The FBI is currently offering a $1 million reward for information leading to Chesimard’s arrest.
At the time of her arrest, she was wanted in connection with a series of felonies in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx (the boroughs Bowman currently represents along with Westchester County).
In 1998, Congress unanimously passed a resolution calling for her extradition.
