Rep Don Davis allocated $40K of taxpayer money for office renovations

A House Democrat from North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District is under fire for spending over $40,000 on renovations for his district office, involving a furniture and interior design firm. During the second quarter of 2023, Davis reported $27,300 in expenses labeled as “housing” and an additional $13,030 for “office supplies and furniture,” which places him second among 435 House members in these expenditures.

“When I was first elected to Congress, we started from scratch, establishing an office without furniture or supplies. After redistricting, we expanded to better serve our constituents,” Davis said when discussing the expenses. He noted the increasing costs faced at a national level and the financial effects of redistricting.

The only other lawmaker with higher housing expenses this year appears to be Rep. Bobby Scott from Virginia. The design firm, Tough Office, which now operates under the name “Young Office,” focuses on creating inspirational and engaging spaces.

In response to the scrutiny, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) defended Davis, asserting that his spending is appropriate for his responsibilities. DCCC spokeswoman Madison Andrus emphasized the importance of keeping representatives in office to serve their constituents, suggesting that Davis’s example could serve as a model for Republicans.

However, the DCCC had previously highlighted similar expenditures as problematic, targeting Republican Rep. Steve Chabot, who spent significantly less than Davis has. A spokesperson for the Congressional Leadership Fund, which is Republican-aligned, criticized Davis, pointing out that families in North Carolina struggle to make ends meet while he spends taxpayer money on what they consider extravagant office renovations and ride-sharing services.

Although Davis’s costs aren’t the highest among lawmakers, they coincide with other financial controversies during his time in office. Comparatively, Rep. Valerie Foushee, also from North Carolina, had housing expenses under $3,000 in 2023.

Davis has faced additional criticism for spending almost $10,000 related to travel, including a trip to the southern U.S. border that incurred nearly $7,000 in airfare. Members of Congress are required to publicly report their expenses, including those on office operations and decor.

Notably, housing funds are intended for minor office decoration and various expenses related to the office environment. There’s significant variability in how different members utilize these funds, and some may find extravagant spending disconcerting. In 2015, former Rep. Aaron Schock was heavily criticized for using taxpayer money to renovate his office in an extravagant style.

Looking ahead, Davis is set to compete against Laurie Buckhout, a retired Army colonel, in the upcoming November elections.
