Rep. Donalds labels Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey a 'fool' during immigration turmoil

Escalating Tensions Over Immigration in Minneapolis

Rep. Byron Donald, a Republican from Florida, has accused Minnesota Democrats of deliberately inciting fear regarding immigration enforcement as a standoff unfolds between federal agents and activists in Minneapolis.

Donald referred to Mayor Jacob Frey as “an idiot and a buffoon,” asserting that state leaders, if they were serious about upholding the law, would participate in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) 287(g) program. This program allows local law enforcement to enforce certain immigration laws, which would help identify and detain noncitizens who are subject to removal.

“But he doesn’t want to do that,” Donald stated during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” He criticized Frey and Governor Walz for what he described as their outlandish goals. “That’s what they’re looking for. They want Astroturf protesters… They’re standing up to President Trump because their party has no idea and they chose this path,” he said.

Donald expressed skepticism about the motivations behind a recent protest against ICE, suggesting that the demonstrators were possibly paid to create chaos. He highlighted their disruption during a service at St. Paul’s Church, where attendees mistakenly believed the pastor to be an ICE official.

“These people will say they have a First Amendment right to speak, but they just trampled on that church’s First Amendment right to be able to worship,” Donald added.

In Minnesota, the conflict between ICE agents and protesters has intensified, particularly after the murder of Renee Good, which involved ICE. Following the violent incidents, President Trump has ordered the readiness of 1,500 soldiers for potential deployment to the area.

During a recent speech commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Donald invoked King’s legacy to argue for peaceful protests. “Dr. King’s legacy has always been about peaceful protest,” he noted. He emphasized that it is crucial for demonstrators in Minneapolis to embody the spirit of King, especially during turbulent times.

“If you don’t agree, please say it clearly. Your opinion may differ, but don’t go after the police officer. Don’t threaten them,” he urged, insisting that such actions fall short of honoring King’s principles.
