Rep. Eli Crane Proposes Medal of Honor for Journalist Exposing Fraud
Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) has announced plans to introduce legislation that would grant the Congressional Medal of Honor to independent journalist Nick Shirley. This recognition is for Shirley’s efforts in revealing a purported fraud scheme that involves members of Minnesota’s Somali community.
During a recent Oversight Committee hearing, Crane expressed gratitude towards independent reporters like Shirley and Dave Hock for their extensive work on the story. “I am introducing legislation to award the Congressional Medal of Honor to Nick Shirley for his explosive work exposing astronomical fraud in Minnesota,” he stated.
Shirley’s Investigative Work in Minnesota
Shirley, who shares his findings through social media and YouTube, has been visiting various day care, medical, and welfare facilities across Minnesota. Recently, he uncovered many healthcare providers that appeared to operate with minimal resources, despite receiving millions in government funding.
What’s interesting is that when Shirley attempted to inquire about their services, many of the programs seemed to decline his inquiries. While his research involved only a few cases, it offers a glimpse into the operation of these programs as Congress looks into the substantial losses Minnesota has incurred due to fraud.
Some estimates suggest that Minnesota might have lost as much as $9 billion to fraud similar to what Shirley has reported.
Public Reaction and Oversight Concerns
Crane remarked that Shirley’s videos provided invaluable insights into Minnesota’s systemic oversight issues and demonstrated how simply some operations can be exposed. “I’m doing this because the American people are tired of this situation and tired of the mainstream media not covering this at all,” he noted.
Moreover, Crane emphasized that Shirley’s work must persist, raising a critical question: “Is this executive-level incompetence on the part of the governor and attorney general, or are they involved?” It’s a thought-provoking point that leaves room for further discussion and investigation into the state’s handling of these issues.
