Rep. Elise Stefanik rumored to run for governor, responds to Hochul: ‘Worst governor in America’

Rep. Elise Stefanik, a prominent supporter of Trump, is rumored to be eyeing a gubernatorial run in 2026 and has sharply criticized New York’s Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, labeling her “the worst governor in America.”

On Friday, Hochul took to social media to claim that Stefanik had voted in favor of cuts that would jeopardize five hospitals, endangering the health and safety of their staff and patients “to help Donald Trump.”

“I don’t support that. I’m fighting vigorously to protect New Yorkers’ healthcare,” Hochul stated.

In her response, Stefanik welcomed Hochul to the “battle,” stating, “When you testified, were you not fully exposed during our final round, especially given your sanctuary state policies that failed at your expense? Let’s talk about Medicaid now.”

Stefanik has accused Hochul of extending Medicaid benefits to undocumented immigrants, claiming it puts New Yorkers in a vulnerable position.

Stefanik further criticized Hochul’s management of New York’s Medicaid program, alleging that there has been widespread waste and abuse under her administration.

“America’s worst governor, Kathy Hochul, oversees the worst Medicaid program in the nation, which harms New Yorkers. I’ve worked hard to strengthen Medicaid for our residents,” she declared.

She added, “Kathy, your approval ratings in rural New York are plummeting,” and emphasized her own achievements in improving rural hospitals in her district.

In another post, she remarked, “Oh Kathy. I see you’re keeping busy these days. Between scheduling tweets and trying to manage the Democratic mayor’s rapid responses, it seems like a lot.”

This back-and-forth comes as Stefanik pressed Hochul to clarify her stance on Mayor Zoran Mamdani, a new Democratic candidate criticized for his statements on Israel and Palestine while identifying as a democratic socialist.

Hochul has announced plans to meet with Mamdani but has not publicly endorsed him.

Stefanik, as a leader among New York Democrats, charged that Hochul has “fully embraced the anti-Semitic communist candidate,” asserting responsibility for the “catastrophe.”

Earlier this month, Stefanik indicated to Republican supporters on Staten Island that she was “strongly considering” entering the governor’s race.

She has also rolled out a new State Political Action Committee aimed at reinforcing the Republican Party’s influence in New York.
