California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell tried to spread falsehoods about the January 6 Capitol riot, but quickly faced backlash from critics on social media.
Swalwell was seeking to criticize a sweeping order by newly sworn-in President Donald Trump to pardon approximately 1,500 defendants involved in the 2021 riots. The other 14 cases were given reduced sentences so that the administration could examine them more carefully.
“Your rhetoric/gaslighting gave the Republicans a super majority. Thank you.”
“No day in America has more police officers been injured in a single incident than on January 6th. In one of his first acts as president, Donald Trump released all rioters who attacked and injured police officers.” Swalwell said. I wrote on social media.
“This is the Joker freeing the insane in a mental hospital and unleashing all hell,” he added, referring to the comic book movie.
Many took issue with Swalwell's bizarre claim that no other event had injured as many police officers as on January 6th.
“That's a total lie. You were lying for profit. You tried to impeach 45 people, you were lying to sell books and hide the truth. You were investigated and the public was told how deceitful you were. You will find out.” answered Former candidate Cheryl Riley.
“72 police officers died on 9/11, and hundreds more died from 9/11-related illnesses in the years that followed. I just want to talk and complain about 1/6, but especially Don't lie.'' Doing so would dishonor the memory of all fallen officers. ” read One reply.
“Thanks to your rhetoric/gaslighting, Republicans won a supermajority. We are grateful. This is the most important work you have ever done. You will be in the majority. Fight! Fight!” said Another critic.
Some point to the killing of five Dallas police officers in a 2016 ambush and the many officers injured during the George Floyd Black Lives Matter riots.
Still others ridiculed Swalwell, citing his embarrassing relationship with Christine Fang, a campaign donor and organizer who was identified by federal investigators as a spy for the communist Chinese government.
