Wisconsin Judge Avoids Prison Sentence for Aiding Immigrants

Hannah Dugan, a former judge in Milwaukee County, has been found guilty of a felony for assisting Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, in evading ICE agents. While Dugan was fined $5,000, she will not serve any jail time; federal prosecutors had aimed for a sentence of 15 to 21 months. Her attorney mentioned that she is eager to appeal the ruling.

Impeachment Articles Filed Against Judge Steele

In a separate incident, Republican Rep. Greg Steube from Florida has initiated impeachment articles against Judge John E. Steele. This comes after the recent House Resolution 1431 directed the release of Michael Guerra Morales, a convicted Cuban airline hijacker, from ICE custody. Judge Steele is accused of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Morales, who is in the U.S. illegally, was released following Judge Steele’s order on July 8.

Backlash Against Judicial Decisions

Steube expressed frustration, stating, “This is precisely the kind of judicial overreach that frustrates the American public. Judge Steele had valid legal grounds to keep a convicted hijacker off the streets, yet he opted for release instead.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Morales and others hijacked a Cuban commuter plane in 2003 after assaulting a flight attendant. They redirected the flight over 100 miles to Monroe County, Florida, landing at Key West International Airport.

Upon arrival, Morales was arrested and charged with aircraft piracy and conspiracy, ultimately receiving a 22-year prison sentence.

Judge’s Decision on Release

Despite Morales’ conviction, Judge Steele, a Clinton appointee, mandated his release last week. Steele cited a Supreme Court ruling concerning the detention of non-deportable aliens, asserting that the government cannot keep people in solitary confinement indefinitely as a means to circumvent prolonged deportation processes.
