Rep. Henry Cuellar says DSA is 'utilizing' the Democratic Party as a 'means'

Cuellar Warns DSA About Using Democratic Party

Representative Henry Cuellar has raised concerns over the Democratic Socialist Party of America (DSA), suggesting they’re leveraging the Democratic Party as a temporary platform to promote radical policies.

Speaking on “Saturday in America,” Cuellar claimed that DSA candidates are concealing more extremist ideas behind gentler rhetoric to capture Democratic seats. “They’re looking to exploit the Democratic Party’s safer strongholds, fully aware that the party is struggling. They aim to use us as a conduit for their broader agenda,” he remarked.

Cuellar emphasized that Texas Democrats should firmly reject DSA’s radical suggestions, which he believes include drastic actions like reorganizing the Supreme Court and dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“I find DSA’s agenda radical. I’ve looked through their platform,” Cuellar said. “They want to eliminate the Senate. We would need a constitutional amendment for that, right? They want ICE gone. I can’t support that. They’re pushing to defund police departments and promote open borders. I firmly oppose these ideas. Prisons? They want to eliminate those as well.”

He also highlighted how DSA candidates are gaining public support by steering clear of discussions around their more radical ideas but instead focusing on appealing topics like affordability and housing. Cuellar stated, “They’re trying to benefit from the Democratic Party without addressing their extreme positions. They talk about affordability, which sounds good, yet we as Democrats must reject such extremism.”

Cuellar expressed frustration at socialists capitalizing on Democratic strengths without even having their own party. “I completely reject them,” he asserted. He detailed his own experience with the DSA and Justice Democrats spending over $20 million in his previous primaries, focused on supporting border security and oil and gas jobs.

“I overcame them by backing the Border Patrol and bolstering security measures. And the result? Democratic voters in my district decisively supported those views, rejecting the radical alternatives,” he explained.

This warning comes amid recent victories for several DSA-backed candidates in states like New York and Colorado. Notably, Melat Quiros ousted long-serving Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette in a Denver district. Furthermore, a recent election in New York saw a wave of far-left candidates achieving success, alongside endorsements from Zoran Mamdani, the democratic socialist mayor of New York City.
