Investigation into Ilhan Omar’s Wealth Intensifies
In Washington, President Trump confirmed on Monday that both the Justice Department and Congress are probing the increasing net worth of Representative Ilhan Omar. This comes after reports surfaced that House Republicans are set to examine the finances of the Minnesota Democrat and her husband, who is a financier.
Trump, who has previously suggested jail or deportation for Omar, shared updates on the ongoing investigations following the appointment of border czar Tom Homan to ease tensions in Minnesota. This unrest coincided with the recent shooting death of an ICU nurse by federal immigration agents.
The president highlighted that Minnesota is under scrutiny for “welfare fraud.” He pointed out that Omar, who “left Somalia with nothing,” now claims a net worth of tens of millions in her financial disclosures.
In response, Omar, 43, remarked, “Sorry, Mr. Trump, your support is crumbling and you’re panicking.” She accused him of distracting from his own issues with “lies and conspiracy theories” while asserting that previous investigations had been fruitless. “Get those bad guys out of Minnesota,” she added.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, had earlier mentioned the possibility of subpoenaing Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, who co-owns a business with her.
Comer acknowledged that they might face significant legal challenges as they attempt to investigate the sudden increase in Omar’s assets. Mynett’s investment firm, Rose Lake Capital, reported only $42.44 in its bank account in 2022, according to court documents related to a lawsuit in South Dakota against its affiliates.
Contrastingly, Omar’s financial disclosures indicate that Rose Lake Capital is valued at up to $25 million. While details about the couple’s personal stakes in the firm have not been disclosed publicly, assets belonging to spouses are required to be reported in Congressional documents.
Additional financial documents regarding Mynett’s other ventures (including a currently abandoned winery and cannabis farm) suggest their combined net worth ranges from $6 million to $30 million.
“Someone will find out,” Comer remarked, regarding the significant increase in property values. “It will either be my committee or the ethics committee.”
A spokesperson for Rose Lake stated that Mynett earned under $20,000 in 2024 from various stock investments, even as the House disclosures capture the total assets held by those companies.
In a post on Monday, Trump claimed that Omar’s net worth might exceed $44 million.
“Time will tell everything,” Comer added.
Omar’s family fled Somalia during the civil war, first seeking refuge in Kenya before being granted asylum in the U.S. They arrived in Arlington, Virginia, before eventually settling in Minneapolis in 1997. Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000.
