Isla Hirsi, the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), shared on Tuesday that she is currently jobless following her graduation from Barnard College.
“Unemployment got me,” she posted alongside selfies on her Instagram Stories.
The 22-year-old, who is known for her activism, seems to be selling some of her clothes to her 82,000+ followers on social media. “I’m selling now [Depop]!!” she wrote, providing a link to her resale page for anyone interested.
She has listed several items, including skirts and a “Beloved Multicolor Striped Cardigan,” as part of her efforts to clear out her closet.
Last April, Hirsi was among over 100 protesters who were arrested by the NYPD while demonstrating on Columbia University’s campus as part of an anti-Israel movement. One of her peers from the Columbia University Apartheid Divest group faced suspension from Barnard due to his arrest, although the university’s president reversed the decision within a week.
Hirsi graduated from Barnard in May. During that time, Rep. Omar expressed immense pride, saying, “There is no greater joy as a parent than seeing your child succeed.” She reflected on Hirsi’s college journey, which involved navigating challenges during the pandemic while standing up against what Omar described as Columbia’s support for genocide.
Omar added, “I am so proud of you, Isla, and I can’t wait to see you thrive in the real world.”
Following the protests related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, many leading law firms and CEOs have declared that they will not hire graduates who participated in the discrimination or harassment of Jewish students. It’s uncertain if Hirsi’s current unemployment is connected to her activism at Columbia or Barnard.
