Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s Statements on Law Enforcement Spark Social Media Backlash
Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas recently faced scrutiny online after comments she made during a podcast were shared widely. The discussion, which aired last Wednesday on the “grounded” podcast, caught the attention of many, especially critics.
In the clip, Crockett stated, “I want to make it clear that law enforcement is not to prevent crime. Law enforcement solves crimes, that’s what they are supposed to do.” This perspective seemed to trigger immediate reactions, as some people felt her stance was somewhat misaligned with traditional views on law enforcement.
Crockett, known for her candid views, reflected on how law enforcement was utilized by the Trump administration in Washington, D.C., and expressed her disapproval, saying, “I think it was awful.” Her criticism highlighted concerns about the role of various security forces and law enforcement agencies during that period.
She raised questions about the relationship between the government and its citizens, stating, “How about we have a government that is hostile to our people?” This sentiment resonated with some lawmakers who argued that agencies like security guards and ICE were not intended for the purposes Trump employed them for, emphasizing that local law enforcement should focus on solving crimes rather than preventing them.
Journalist Nick Thorto shared the clip on social media, calling attention to Crockett’s statement, which drew various reactions. Some commentators, like scientist and author Matt Van Swal, found her remarks particularly problematic, calling it “one of the stupid statements anyone on planet Earth has ever made.” Others chimed in, including Alexa Henning, deputy chief of staff for Tarshi Gabbard, who expressed concern over the implications of such views in politics.
A law enforcement officer, Deon Joseph, also weighed in. He stated, “Jasmine Crockett is wrong. It’s our job to prevent crime. We need more support. We didn’t sign up to wait for people to be victimized,” as he shared his video response to her comments.
Meanwhile, a conservative TikTok account quoted Crockett’s remarks with a mix of disbelief and critique, asking, “Hmm, what????”
As of now, Rep. Crockett has not provided a response to inquiries for further comment.
