Rep. Jerry Nadler Announces Retirement
Rep. Jerry Nadler, a veteran Democrat from New York, has declared that he will not run for re-election in 2026, marking the end of a notable 34-year tenure in Congress. This decision places him at a significant juncture in New York’s democratic landscape.
The 78-year-old Nadler confirmed his plans to retire, expressing that the changing dynamics within the Democratic Party influenced his choice. He mentioned, “When I see Biden, I really say something about the need for generational change for parties. I want to respect that.” He expressed hope for a younger successor, suggesting, “maybe they can do better and maybe help us.” Speculation surrounds his longtime aide, Senator Mika Rusher, as a potential candidate for his seat.
Nadler’s exit paves the way for a contested Democratic primary in Manhattan. His district stretches from Union Square through Central Park, encompassing major cultural landmarks and affluent neighborhoods. While several allies might run, Nadler has indicated he won’t be directly involved in selecting his successor.
Rising to national prominence during Trump’s administration, Nadler had his first significant run-in with the former president as the leader of the Judiciary Committee in 2019. Their conflicts date back to the 1980s, particularly regarding Manhattan development projects. Trump famously labeled Nadler as “one of the worst hacks in modern politics.”
Throughout his career, Nadler has faced criticism, especially over his immigration and law enforcement stances. In June 2025, he accused U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of “concealing fraud” by disguising their identities, leading to a backlash from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). They pointed out that such measures were necessary for the safety of their officers, who had reportedly faced a surge in violence during enforcement actions.
Earlier in the summer, Nadler engaged in a dispute with the DHS over an incident at his Manhattan office. He claimed that DHS officials had no right to enter without a warrant, accusing them of dishonesty about their actions. Although an aide was briefly detained, they were released without charges, and the incident sparked several weeks of tension.
Nadler has consistently advocated for a comprehensive immigration policy, arguing that immigrants are vital to the nation. He stated that low birth rates necessitate an increase in immigration, countering views like those of Mark Krikorian from the Center for Immigration Studies, who is known for opposing such arguments.
He drafted legislation in 2021 to expand the Supreme Court, opposing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s judicial reforms. Nadler received scrutiny in 2018 during discussions about Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation and various Democratic strategies to investigate Trump if they regained control of the House. He has been vocal against Republican tactics in impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton.
In 2022, Nadler publicly supported the FBI’s search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, expressing approval with a simple “Good!” His role as a manager in Trump’s impeachment trial led him to assert that the Democratic case “is completely proven unquestionable.”
Besides national controversies, Nadler faced challenges back home. In 2023, a father whose child fell victim to anti-Semitic violence criticized Nadler and Senator Chuck Schumer for not sufficiently condemning attacks on the Jewish community during a House Judiciary Committee hearing held in New York.
That same year, he sparked bipartisan backlash when he suggested that requiring young children to wear masks during the pandemic amounted to “child abuse.”
Despite criticisms, Nadler has remained a steadfast ally of Democratic leadership, consistently voting in line with the party. However, he has also occasionally taken more independent stances. In a recent interview, he acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in Gaza has affected his perspective, noting his support for Israel’s missile defense while criticizing the actions taken under Netanyahu’s leadership.
