Sheriffs Suing States Over Immigration Policies

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) discussed the ongoing lawsuits by some sheriffs against their own states, stemming from concerns that ignoring immigration laws endangered public safety. This conversation took place on a recent episode of Breitbart News Daily.

Jordan highlighted the testimonies of families affected by crime stemming from sanctuary jurisdictions, areas that are strongly supported by Democrats. “We have numerous angel families in these jurisdictions where illegal immigrants, who have previously been charged with crimes, are released and then go on to commit further offenses. Each week, we heard from these families at our sessions. It’s crucial to address this issue, which I consider a misguided policy,” he stated, giving context to his remarks as the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

He pointed out that 18 major cities, 11 states, and several counties—including Fairfax and Arlington County near Washington D.C.—are designated as sanctuary jurisdictions. “This accounts for nearly a third of the country’s population. It’s just counterintuitive. Why would anyone want to take such risks?” he questioned, referencing a sheriff from Maryland who filed a lawsuit against the state, expressing concerns that sanctuary policies undermine safety. “He emphasized, ‘I was elected to safeguard my community, and this is a threat to that,’” Jordan recounted.

He also mentioned a sheriff in New York who has taken similar legal action, emphasizing the need for Republicans to focus on this issue as the midterms approach.

Jordan continued, “I’ve spoken with two sheriffs who are challenging their states, and I asked them why they felt this was necessary. I mean, suing your own state is quite significant. Their reply? ‘Because it endangers our community’s safety.’”

He pointed out that these officials, elected as the primary law enforcement figures in their regions, clearly recognize the flawed nature of these policies, which motivates their actions.
