Rep. Jim McGovern’s cancer-stricken daughter, 23, dies ‘unexpectedly’ on Italy trip

Rep. Jim McGovern announced Thursday that his 23-year-old daughter Molly, who was hit by cancer, died “unexpectedly” while on a trip to Italy.

Molly McGovern, the only daughter of a Massachusetts Democrat, visited his best friend and his family after completing his studies in Australia. said in a statement.

McGovern, his wife Lisa and son Patrick did not disclose the cause of Molly’s death, but pointed out that she had fought a rare form of cancer.

“Even when she faced a rare cancer diagnosis, she did so with relentless courage, optimism and tenacity.

They described Molly as “the soul of our family” and she said that she “leaves pure joy.”

“She illuminated every room with a shining smile. Laughter, endless warmth, and a sharp wit that can quickly disarm you. She was incredibly funny, fiercely loyal and wise beyond her years,” the statement said.

“Molly had a rare gift. She really believed everyone was special, so everyone felt special. She treated people with compassion and kindness.

The family also pointed out that Molly is a stubborn fan of the Boston Bruins.

“But that wasn’t comparable to the love she gave so freely to her family and friends,” the family said. “If you’ve ever met Molly, you carried her light with you. She had such an impact on people.”

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy was one of those who expressed sadness to the McGovern family, saying she was “grief” on the news.

“Molly was the light of her family’s life and many life. She was a kind, clever, caring young woman who was exposed to many people’s lives,” says Healy. said in a statement.

“We all feel sad that she will be taken soon. Joanna and I have sent all our love and support to Rep. McGovern, Lisa, Patrick and all their loved ones during this difficult time.”

A top Democrat on the powerful House Rules Committee, McGovern has represented Congress Bay since 1997 and has served in the Second Congressional District, anchored by Worcester since 2013.
