Representative Lauren Boebert (R) has introduced a bill to abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
The bill, HR 129, was introduced with Republicans just weeks away from taking control of the House, Senate and White House.
newsweek noticed Boebert's effort to abolish the agency is the latest in a growing number of Republican efforts to abolish the agency.
For example, in November 2024, Rep. Eric Burlison (R) also called for the agency to be abolished.
On November 25, 2024, Breitbart News reported that Burlison told Fox News that the ATF is a “disaster.”
he said: “For decades, they have served as a disaster response agency. [which has] It violates the Second Amendment. ”
ATF issued numerous regulations during the Biden/Harris administration, one of which made it a crime to own a legally purchased AR pistol stabilizer brace. Another ATF rule declared that 80% of completed firearm frames are firearms and can only be obtained through background checks. Yet another ATF rule circumvented Congress through new restrictions on private gun sales.
On January 2, 2024, Breitbart News noted that Biden's ATF Director Steven Dettelbach had tendered his resignation effective January 18, 2025, two days before Trump retakes the White House.
Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, welcomed the resignation, saying, “President Trump will have one less person to fire after taking office and one less gun lobbyist on the government payroll.'' .
