Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) on Tuesday morning slammed Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s push for gun control, vowing to “strip away power from Biden’s corrupt Department of Health and Human Services and weaken our constitutional rights…and cut all funding to unelected Washington bureaucrats.”
Miller said in X’s post.
🚨Joe Biden has announced that he will use his “Public Health Emergency Powers” to violate our Second Amendment rights. I will strip Biden’s corrupt Department of Health and Human Services of its powers and work to cut all funding to unelected Washington bureaucrats who believe they can violate our Constitutional rights. #2A https://t.co/O6u8Flct4n

Breitbart News reported that Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) also criticized Murthy’s actions, noting that Murthy had indicated during his confirmation hearing that getting involved in gun control was not his goal.
Indeed, during his confirmation hearing, Murthy suggested he had no interest in declaring gun violence a health crisis in order to push for gun control.

However, on June 25, 2024, Prime Minister Murthy declared gun violence a “public health crisis” and used the declaration to push for a ban on certain firearms and to implement a range of other restrictions, including the implementation of universal background checks.
During Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s confirmation hearing, I asked him whether he would declare a public health emergency to institute gun control measures.
He told me, “My focus is not on this issue.”
He did it today.

Brown is calling on senators to support him. Right to Keep and Bear Arms Act, The bill aims to prohibit administration officials from “declaring a public health emergency in order to impose gun control laws.”
“Declaring a public health emergency does not give the executive branch the right to infringe on the Second Amendment rights Americans have to protect themselves and their families,” Brown said. “Congress must make this 100% clear in law to ensure that the rights of law-abiding citizens are not destroyed by bureaucratic loopholes opened up by exploiting a crisis.”
