Government Shutdown Over Healthcare Debate

In Washington, longtime Democrat Maxine Waters announced that her party decided to shut down the government to ensure “health care for everyone,” which includes provisions for undocumented immigrants.

The 87-year-old congresswoman addressed questions on Tuesday outside the U.S. Capitol regarding Democrats’ reluctance to support a funding bill aimed at keeping the government operational until November 21.

“Are Democrats insisting on healthcare for illegal foreigners?” asked Alison Steinburg from Lindelltv.

“Democrats believe in healthcare for everyone,” Waters replied shortly before Senate colleagues blocked several spending measures.

“We want to save lives,” she continued. “We want healthcare available to those who, without government assistance, may not survive.”

When pressed further about the implications of prioritizing healthcare for undocumented individuals, Waters countered sharply, “That’s what you’re implying. You’re here suggesting that we’re focused only on non-citizens.”

“Stop it! This kind of journalism is unnecessary,” she asserted, becoming visibly frustrated. “You’re misrepresenting the situation.”

Although a Republican majority succeeded in passing a law in the House, they fell short of overcoming the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster.

Only three Democrats supported the so-called “clean” continuing resolution: Senators John Fetterman from Pennsylvania and Katherine Cortez Masto from Nevada, along with Representative Jared Golden from Maine.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries rallied the Democratic Caucus against the spending bill, arguing that it didn’t sufficiently maintain the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of 2025.

Republicans, including figures from the Trump administration, accused Democrats of aiming to expand taxpayer-funded healthcare services to non-citizens.

President Trump asserted on social media that Waters’ comments indicate Democrats are prioritizing healthcare for illegal immigrants at the expense of American taxpayers.

Vice President JD Vance echoed these concerns during a White House briefing, accusing Democrats of using the potential reopening of the government as leverage for their agenda.

In response, Senator Ro Khanna from California argued on Fox Business Network that the actual funds allocated for undocumented individuals represent a minor part of the broader Medicaid cuts or ACA.

During an interview with CNN, Jeffries categorically denied the claim that Democrats want to provide insurance benefits for undocumented immigrants. He clarified that the focus was on restoring funding for Emergency Medicaid hospitals.

The Congressional Budget Office reported that between fiscal years 2017 and 2023, governments spent approximately $27 billion on emergency Medicaid services for individuals who are not qualified for full Medicaid due to their immigration status.

Legislation proposed by Trump aims to restrict access to non-citizen services starting next year.

There are ongoing discussions among moderates from both parties about a compromise that could preserve some ACA subsidies to prevent a potential surge in healthcare premiums.

At least five Democrats need to break ranks and support the clean continuing resolution in the Senate, with the next vote on this expected to take place on Friday.
