Campaign Finance in Competitive House Race

Republican U.S. Representative Mike Lawler has gathered nearly $5 million in campaign contributions as he prepares to compete against Democratic U.S. Army veteran Kate Conley in a closely contested House race.

Lawler’s campaign fund totals approximately $4.85 million, significantly outpacing Conley’s $1 million before the election set for November 3. However, Conley had to allocate funds toward winning a recent five-way Democratic primary, which may have limited her resources.

Despite those challenges, Conley raised $1.6 million between April and June this year, slightly more than Lawler’s $1.4 million as he seeks reelection for a third term representing the crucial 17th Congressional District in the Hudson Valley. To date, she has raised around $3.2 million during this election cycle.

On another note, the Rollers for Congress campaign has brought in nearly $8 million, and when combined with their Community Chest Committee, the total for the 2025-2026 cycle approaches $9 million.

“These figures illustrate a clear message: Hudson Valley voters appreciate effective leadership, and Mike Lawler is receiving their support,” commented Lawler’s campaign manager, Ciro Riccardi. He added that nearly 5,000 individual donors contributed to Lawler’s grassroots efforts this quarter.

Riccardi believes Lawler is in a strong position for reelection. “Kate Conley faces a challenging path as she heads into Election Day with only a fraction of the resources that Lawler possesses,” he pointed out, criticizing the Democratic Party for expending millions on a primary where Conley barely secured half of the vote.

He also mentioned the need for substantial spending to make the race competitive, stating, “While Conley aligns herself with figures like AOC, Lawler unites various groups—working families, labor, law enforcement, Republicans, independents, and pragmatic Democrats—who want results.” He expressed confidence that Lawler would have the necessary resources to effectively communicate his record as the election approaches.

The Conley campaign didn’t immediately respond but expressed gratitude for the extensive support received from constituents in the Hudson Valley and nationwide, according to a statement to Politico. Democrats are anticipated to raise significant funds to assist Conley in her bid to reclaim the seat, which could play a vital role in determining House control after the upcoming midterm elections.

The independent Cook Political Report has labeled the election as a toss-up, indicating it could be one of the most fiercely contested House races nationwide.

Recently, a House Democratic poll indicated Conley holds a 6-point lead over Lawler among likely voters in the district, which encompasses Rockland and Putnam counties, parts of northern Westchester County, and some areas of southern Dutchess County, with results showing 51% for Conley to 45% for Lawler.

In other election news, Republican Michael Lipetri, who is challenging Democratic Representative Tom Suozzi for a rematch in Long Island’s 3rd Congressional District, has raised $1 million from various campaign committees, including support from a joint party committee. He currently has $835,000 in cash on hand.

As for Suozzi, his latest financial filings were not available, but previous reports indicated he had $5.5 million ready for the campaign as of early June.

Lipetri was just three percentage points away from defeating Suozzi in their last match, despite previously holding a significant lead two years ago. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman may choose to back Lipetri if he takes the lead in the district against incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, similar to what happened in the previous election cycle.

Recently, Vice President J.D. Vance visited Long Island, commending Lipetri and critiquing Suozzi, stating, “People are fed up with career politicians like Tom Suozzi, who profit immensely from stock trading in Congress while imposing higher taxes and jeopardizing our financial future.”

The 3rd Congressional District includes the North Shore of Long Island as well as parts of Suffolk and Queens counties.
