Rep. Mikie Sherrill from New Jersey is making headlines again, suggesting for a third time that President Trump needs to step back as she eyes the governorship of her state. She hinted that after the mid-term elections in 2026, it might be time for Trump to take a break.
At a campaign rally on April 26, held at the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company in Manchester Township, Sherrill shared her thoughts with supporters. “You really need to challenge yourself. Just getting through tough fights isn’t enough,” she mentioned, expressing her resolve to tackle the hard issues.
At 53 years old, Sherrill was first elected to Congress in the midterms of 2018, winning a seat in a district traditionally held by Republicans. Notably, she supported Trump during his early presidency.
“When I called out the president, I knew the stakes,” she reflected during a recent event where audience members interjected with their opinions.
Sherrill also responded to Rep. Sri Thanedar, who recently introduced articles of impeachment against Trump, claiming various high crimes, including violating federal programs and not respecting First Amendment rights.
While the administration claims that Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a deportee, is affiliated with the MS-13 gang, critics argue he deserves due process, especially since a judge previously classified him under a protective status, fearing he might face danger if returned to his home country.
“Trump’s actions undermined our judicial system and blurred the lines of power,” Thanedar stated when discussing the impeachment articles.
At her rally, Sherrill emphasized how a Democratic-led initiative could effectively counter Trump’s policies. She recalled her experiences on January 6, asserting, “He’s not just going to walk away; that much is clear.”
“We’re trying to unify people in times where he’s attempting to divide us, and we need to mobilize for change,” she added, highlighting the importance of resilience against divisive tactics.
Sherrill is not the only one running for the Democratic nomination, as she faces off against several candidates, including Rep. Josh Gottheimer, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Current Democratic Governor Phil Murphy is in his final term, and the primary is set for June 10th.
