Rep Omar stated that deceased conservative activist Charlie Kirk has no legacy to remember.

Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota referred to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “tragedy.” She expressed that it was unfortunate he was killed “in that way” and noted that there wasn’t any honorable legacy to remember him by.

In a recent conversation, Omar stated, “I don’t have anything to apologize for.” She acknowledged the pain of Kirk’s family, mentioning that his widow and children would bear the burden of this loss for a long time.

She criticized Kirk’s legacy, describing it as filled with prejudice and hate. Being a black woman and a Muslim in the U.S., she made it clear she wouldn’t take part in any narrative that glorified him.

Omar emphasized that while Kirk’s advocates could say whatever they wanted, she wouldn’t compromise her values or identity to fit in. Responding to her own comments about Kirk’s death as a tragedy, her spokesperson pointed out that she indeed condemned the act and expressed sorrow on multiple occasions. However, they also accused right-wing outlets of distorting her words, which they argued could risk her safety.

In the wake of Kirk’s death, Omar claimed that conservatives often place the blame for political violence on the left to justify cracking down on it. “It’s easy to point fingers at others. It’s harder to confront uncomfortable truths,” she remarked. She pointed out the ongoing issue of young white men committing violent acts, stressing that that conversation seems to be overlooked.

Previously, Omar faced backlash for her critical remarks about Kirk on his podcast, which also led to a complaint being filed with the House Ethics Committee against her. Rep. Nancy Mace attempted to push for a censure vote against Omar for her reaction to Kirk’s murder. However, the vote didn’t pass thanks to bipartisan opposition.

In earlier discussions with a progressive news outlet, Omar condemned Kirk’s comments from the past, calling the Republican reaction to his death out of context, and referred to his death as a moment of reflection.
