Rep. Pramila Jayapal brazenly admits her hypocrisy on Senate rules after Trump election ‘trifecta’

Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal of Washington State acknowledged the utter hypocrisy of changing Senate rules after a disastrous Democratic election, but she didn't mince words.

The far-left Democratic Party wants senators to abolish the filibuster rule, which allows them to pass legislation with a simple majority in exchange for a certain amount of support from the opposition. Critics on the right and elsewhere warned of lowering bipartisan standards in Congress.

“Clearly enough voters didn't understand what Democrats were going to do to improve their lives.”

Jayapal was asked by HuffPost's Jennifer Benderley whether she still supports changing filibuster rules after President-elect Donald Trump's historic election victory.

“Do I now support abolishing the filibuster? [GOP] Is there a trifecta? no. But if I had won the trifecta, I would have, too,” she said. answered.

Trump has been declared the winner of the electoral vote and will likely be declared the winner of the popular vote. Republicans have regained the majority in the Senate and are close to expanding their majority in the House.

“If we could have controlled the trifecta and gotten rid of the filibuster to pass minimum wage and pass paid sick leave,” Jayapal said. continuation“I think we were able to build some trust with the American people by passing on a voting measure that was very popular.”

She didn't even pretend to acknowledge the brazen hypocrisy of her position on the filibuster.

Jayapal added: justified Democrats are abolishing the filibuster because “the government has to show what it can accomplish.”

Jayapal also described the Democratic Party's devastating electoral defeat.

“There was clearly a lack of voters who knew what Democrats were going to do to make their lives better,” she says. answered“Especially poor and working-class Americans across this country.”

She said Democrats are keen to mount an effort to defeat President Trump's appointments, which she said would be extreme.

“I think we're going to continue to see a lot of people with shady backgrounds being appointed to a lot of these positions,” Jayapal said. added. “We're going to have to figure out how to best fight.”

Jayapal chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
