Rep Seth Moulton disputes Sen Ed Markey in the 2026 Democratic Senate primary

Sen. Ed Markey Faces Challenge From Rep. Seth Moulton

Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is up against a challenger who is emphasizing age as a key issue in his attempt to unseat the veteran lawmaker.

Representative Seth Moulton, also a Democrat from Massachusetts, launched his Senate campaign with a video titled “Lessons Learned,” which reflected on insights gained during the previous election cycle, especially regarding then-President Joe Biden.

“We are in a crisis, and considering what we learned in the last election, I simply do not believe that Senator Markey should be running for another six-year term at age 80. Additionally, I think a man who has been in Congress for nearly fifty years may not be the right choice to lead us into the future,” Moulton stated in his campaign announcement.

Currently, Markey is 79 and will reach 80 before the upcoming 2026 election.

Moulton insists that while Scott Markey is a good individual, we are, well, in need of a new generation of leadership.

Having first been elected to Congress in 1976, Markey transitioned to the Senate in 2013, where he has since served for a dozen years.

This challenge from Moulton could signify a shift toward younger leadership within the Democratic Party, particularly after their struggles in the last election cycle. Biden’s exit from the race in July and then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s brief campaign, which resulted in losing every swing state and ultimately the popular vote to current President Donald Trump, raised questions about the party’s direction.

This isn’t Moulton’s first confrontation with the Democratic establishment. He won his seat in the House in 2014, defeating long-time Democrat John Tierney. In 2018, he aimed to become the House Speaker, challenging Nancy Pelosi, a move that faced backlash from some voters who suggested it was, well, perhaps sexist and ageist.

In the 2020 primary, Markey bested Congressman Joe Kennedy III, who was then 40 years old. Markey famously paraphrased Kennedy’s great-uncle’s advice about public service during the campaign and dismissed concerns about his age, saying, “There are 500 pieces of legislation on the table, and you think I’m going to quit? That’s exactly what they want.”

Moving forward, Markey is due for another test in November 2026. If he secure wins against Moulton, he would be 86 by the end of his new term.

Both Markey and Moulton’s offices have been contacted for further comments.
