Rep. Sherrill Prevented from Joining Graduation Procession Due to Cheating Issue

Controversy Surrounds Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s Naval Academy Graduation

Recently, it was reported that Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a Democratic candidate from New Jersey, did not walk with her graduation class at the U.S. Naval Academy due to her alleged involvement in a fraud scandal.

Sherrill’s name was absent from a copy of the initiation program from May 1994. Lawmakers have indicated that she could not “walk” with her classmates because she didn’t report some of them for their involvement in cheating, where students were accused of sharing exam answers back in December 1992. However, she did graduate, and she went on to become a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, serving with distinction for nearly a decade.

“I didn’t report some of my classmates, so I didn’t walk, but I graduated and was commissioned as a US Navy officer, serving nearly a decade with the highest level of distinction and honor,” Sherrill stated.

The scandal reportedly centered around electrical engineering exam responses that midshipmen obtained and shared. It is said that about two dozen of Sherrill’s classmates faced disciplinary action. An official noted that out of the 663 midshipmen who took the exam, over 400 were believed to have seen the questions beforehand.

This incident has sparked a Congressional hearing and an internal investigation focused on the Academy’s Honor Code. Dr. Thomas C. Lynch, the head of Annapolis, resigned amidst the controversy, which has led to debates about whether the institution was too lenient in handling past misconduct. In response, the Academy has undertaken reforms to enhance its academic integrity and regain public trust.

In light of the scandal, gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli, a Republican from New Jersey, criticized Sherrill for supposedly building her political career on her Naval Academy experience while hiding her involvement in the cheating scandal.

“Today’s approval by Congresswoman Sherrill, who was involved in the largest fraud and honor scandal in US Navy history, is shocking and unacceptable,” Ciattarelli remarked. “For eight years, Mikie Sherrill has been crafting her political persona while concealing her past misdeeds at the Naval Academy. New Jersey deserves complete transparency.”

In response, Sherrill accused Ciattarelli of utilizing smear tactics, stating, “His latest attempt is to go after a 30-year-old incident that was widely reported during my time as a cadet.”

Recent polling indicates that both Sherrill and Ciattarelli are receiving equal support among voters as they approach the gubernatorial election in November. The survey, conducted from September 22-23, 2025, among 935 likely voters in the state, found that each candidate garnered 43% support, while 11% remained undecided, and 3% planned to vote for another candidate.
