Swalwell Emphasizes New Democratic Leaders, Excludes Newsom
California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell expressed enthusiasm about a new wave of Democratic leaders, although he notably left out Governor Gavin Newsom from his list. During a conversation with CNN host Casey Hunt, Democratic strategist James Carville had commented on the lack of a clear party leader heading into the presidential election.
Swalwell, however, highlighted the potential of current Democratic figures like Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas and Sen. Ruben Gallego from Arizona, likening them to “Marvel superheroes.” He remarked, “We’re the Avengers now, right?” as he described their efforts, including Crockett’s focus on boosting voter turnout for Proposition 50 and Gallego’s ambitions as a Marine and Latino candidate determined to succeed in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Hunt pointed out that Swalwell had not included Newsom as a potential leader, despite discussions around Newsom as a possible contender for the 2028 presidential race. Swalwell’s response was somewhat playful yet hinted at a deeper consideration, suggesting Newsom is perceived as a “showman.” He noted that Newsom’s leadership style has influenced others to adopt more assertive stances, particularly in voicing concerns to the President.
Swalwell further implied that recent actions by Newsom, such as seeking legal triumphs to address military presence on the streets and navigating complex political victories, reflect an evolving style that prioritizes results over presentation.
The context is that the Democratic Party has been reevaluating its leadership since the conclusion of the 2024 presidential election. There has been a growing discontent among progressive members regarding the approaches taken by established leaders like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, especially concerning the government’s operations and the past Trump administration.
In a contrasting perspective, former President Donald Trump has recognized Crockett as a significant future figure for the Democratic Party, with Republican figures hinting at others, including incoming New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, stepping into influential roles.
In a recent interview, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent referred to Mamdani as a potential new leader for the Democratic Party, signifying a shift in the party’s direction. This evolution showcases the ongoing conversations surrounding Democratic leadership and where it may head in the future.
