Rep. Tom Emmer criticizes Walz before 'sanctuary' hearing

House Republican Leaders Criticize Tim Waltz on Immigration Policies

House Republican leaders have voiced strong opposition to Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz regarding his stance on immigration, particularly in reference to the Sanctuary City policy. This week, Waltz is set to testify alongside Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and New York Governor Kathy Hochul at a House Oversight Committee hearing.

Representative Tom Emmer, GOP Whip and Minnesota’s representative, mixed a touch of sarcasm in his remarks, wishing Waltz “good luck” as he prepares to defend his policies in front of Congress. He painted a bleak picture of Waltz’s immigration agenda, suggesting it prioritizes benefits for undocumented immigrants at the expense of taxpayers.

Emmer succinctly pointed out the key issues at hand: “Tim Waltz’s immigration agenda is packed with outrageous comments against ICE agents and offers numerous taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal immigrants in Minnesota.” He expressed skepticism about Waltz’s ability to defend his record effectively.

Some Democrats Join Republicans on Sanctuary City Debate

In an interesting turn of events, a few House Democrats have aligned with Republicans in questioning the effectiveness of sanctuary cities. This week, the governors are expected to face a barrage of questions concerning their immigration policies, especially amidst ongoing protests against ICE operations in various locations, including Los Angeles.

The phrase “sanctuary city” itself lacks a formal legal definition. However, it’s understood to refer to areas that aim to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation by limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. These cities often turn down ICE requests for information about arrested individuals, creating a safe harbor that many immigrants seek.

Criticism from House Oversight Committee Chair

James Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, made a pointed remark, questioning why governors prioritize the protection of undocumented immigrants over the safety of American citizens. He indicated that the sanctuary policies tend to only benefit those involved in criminal activities.

“The Trump administration is taking decisive steps to remove criminals from our country, but states like Illinois, Minnesota, and New York are working against that effort,” Comer stated, criticizing these sanctuary jurisdictions for obstructing federal enforcement.

Waltz was unavailable for comment when reached for a response. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, June 12th, at 10 AM ET.
