Ryan Zinke Addresses Assassination of Charlie Kirk
Representative Ryan Zinke from Montana described the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “watershed moment.” He emphasized that Americans should be able to engage in political disagreements without resorting to violence.
During an appearance on News Nation’s show, The Hill, on Friday, Zinke expressed his disappointment over how differing political views have led to violent confrontations, referencing a prior comment from Utah Governor Spencer Cox.
“We should take a moment to reflect,” Zinke stated. “This is, as the governor mentioned, a pivotal moment. What we do next is up to the country.”
“Are we going to keep this up?” he continued. “Can we still have conversations with our neighbors?”
Turning Point USA Hosts Memorial for Charlie Kirk
Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on the campus of Utah Valley University. He was taken to the hospital yet succumbed to his injuries.
The alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, 22, turned himself in after a few days of being pursued by law enforcement.
At a Friday press conference, Governor Cox called for civility, urging those on all sides of the political spectrum to “choose a different path” instead of giving in to frustration.
“This is our moment. Do we escalate or find a way forward? That’s the choice we face,” Cox said.
Public Mourning and Reflection
Reflecting on the events, Zinke shared feelings of anger and sadness over the past two days. He stated that, while anger can push one to the edge, Kirk’s message about dialogue had a calming effect on him.
Zinke reiterated the importance of engaging in political discussions without violence and expressed disappointment at the recent instances of political violence this year.
“We’ve witnessed an assassination attempt,” he noted. “And here with Charlie Kirk, we’re reminded of his call for dialogue.” He added that disagreement should never lead to violence.
Zinke also referenced a violent incident from June, where a man was accused of killing a Democrat and his family in Minneapolis. Other incidents, such as the assassination attempt on former President Trump and the violent attack on Paul Pelosi, further highlight the troubling trend of political violence.
The office of Zinke did not respond immediately to inquiries for further comments.
