A repeat offender has been taken into custody in Charlotte following a troubling video circulating on social media. The footage shows D’Quan Shaffer Hunt, 32, shouting and physically assaulting a woman, in the same area where a stabbing incident involving Irina Zalutka occurred last year, according to police reports.
Hunt has a substantial criminal history, with nine arrests over the last three years. The incident happened on July 30 when he attacked a woman on the street and then escaped the scene. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department noted that the victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized as a result.
Local reporter Hannah Goetz shared the video where Hunt can be seen yelling at a woman for waving at her. The recording captures him forcefully bringing her to the ground, berating her, and then hitting her while demanding that she responds.
Authorities are also looking into a similar incident involving a woman that Hunt reportedly filmed himself. Court records reveal that Hunt’s past arrests cover a range of offenses, including assault, trespassing, and violating probation. In 2020, he was convicted of firing into a building or vehicle. Additionally, he was arrested in December on allegations of threatening someone with a knife near transit tracks.
Another video reportedly shows Hunt pursuing a woman who then attempts to hide behind a vehicle in the street.
The police arrested Hunt on Thursday night, and while he was taken to a medical facility for undisclosed treatment, he will ultimately face charges of assault with a deadly weapon once released. When asked about Hunt’s repeated releases despite his criminal record, a ministry spokesperson stated that was outside their jurisdiction.
There are concerns about other possible victims, as a spokesperson mentioned that there might be additional incidents based on various videos. They encouraged the public to come forward with any relevant information, whether to detectives or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
This arrest follows closely on the heels of the shocking stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Irina Zalutka, which drew widespread attention due to its random nature and the suspect’s extensive arrest history. DeCarlos DeJuan Brown Jr. was charged in that attack, having also faced multiple arrests before.
Overall, the situation highlights ongoing concerns about repeat offenders and public safety in Charlotte.
