Tragic Passing of Former NFL Player Doug Martin
Former NFL running back, Doug Martin, reportedly died by suicide after he jumped from a rehabilitation center just months before his passing in Oakland, California.
As per a report from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), Martin struggled with drug addiction and mental health challenges at the time of his death. He had checked into Tranquility Rehabilitation Center in August, where it was reported that he tested positive for methamphetamine and cocaine, and was found in possession of fentanyl and a hunting knife, among other items.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that on August 13, a clinical director observed Martin outside, appearing to dance with blood on his face and hands. Concerned, she suspected he might have jumped from a second-floor window and hit the side of the building, prompting her to contact the authorities.
Upon their arrival, officers noted that Martin seemed “extremely paranoid.” He reacted aggressively towards deputies attempting to assist him. Reports indicated that he struck one officer on the hand and, allegedly, stabbed another in the nose and mouth. The ACSO document detailed how Martin managed to grab an officer’s wrist during the scuffle, leading to him being pushed down to the ground.
Authorities further stated that he kicked a deputy multiple times. They discovered small bags of cocaine in his pockets and a sizable knife in his backpack, along with a $50 bill containing white powder.
Paramedics attempted to secure Martin onto a stretcher, but he was reportedly resistant and thrashing about. The ACSO report indicated that he was so intoxicated that he couldn’t communicate if he was hurt or in pain.
Deputies believed he was a danger to himself, attributing this to his jump from the window. Consequently, he was held in psychiatric custody for 72 hours and transferred to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
Complications arose after Martin’s police custody on October 18, where he reportedly broke into a neighbor’s house. Brian Murphy, his former agent, shared a statement from Martin’s family, revealing that they were in search of help for him. “Overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug ran out of his house in the middle of the night and entered his neighbor’s residence two doors down,” it said.
Authorities are still looking into the cause and manner of his death. Neurologists are expected to examine Martin’s brain to check for signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition linked to repeated head injury.
Martin, recognized for his smaller frame, determination, and remarkable strength, played for teams including the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His family remarked, “In the end, mental illness proved to be the only enemy Doug could not escape,” highlighting the challenges he faced.
