Law enforcement agents issued 515 citations as they closed an illegal street racing event in a parking lot in Orlando, Florida.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) worked with deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office and Orlando Police Department to close the Street Takeover on February 15th at Orlando's South Orange Blossom Trail. According to Local CBS affiliate news 6 Wkmg. Law enforcement agents issued 515 traffic citations (477 people for spectator violations), made multiple arrests, reported four felony charges and four misdemeanor charges, seized four vehicles and recovered the stolen vehicle. “The success of this operation has reduced immediate risks, demonstrated a strong and positive attitude towards such criminal activity, strengthened the commitment of national and local law enforcement agencies, and strengthened cooperation in protecting the safety and well-being of the public,” FHP said according to Exit.
The collaboration is part of the state's desire to tackle the “increasing threat posed by street acquisition activities,” FHP added.
Orange County Sheriff John Mina publicly supported the bill that urged strict penalties for street racing, which became law in spring 2024, the outlet reported. The penalties work, but the street acquisition will continue, Mina told the outlet.
“What's so dangerous about (these gatherings) is the driver's speed and reckless behavior,” explained Mina. “You're losing control when you're playing donuts at the intersection and your car is sliding around and there. In the end, someone will be hit and killed,” Mina told the outlet.

People should stay calm, engage with drivers involved in street racing, pull on roadsides and refrain from reporting incidents if they see street takeovers, authorities advised.
